Traveling Safely in Avalanche Terrain
The best avalanche rescue is the rescue you never need to perform. Use safe travel techniques when in avalanche terrain:
- Pay attention to slop angles (on the slopes you are on, below, and connected to)
- Travel on ridgelines or in dense trees when possible
- Avoid avalanche paths
- Avoid terrain that could increase the consequences of an avalanche (e.g., cliffs, gullies, large slopes, lakes and rivers, trees, etc)
- Only expose one person at a time (while ascending and descending)
- Pay attention to signs of snow instability and "red flags"
- Communicate frequently and openly with your partners
